BOXXER Series : Cruiserweight Preview
The competition is a platform for rising stars who are fresh to the professional game and top prospects across the country in a 3x3 minute round format designed to provide non-stop action.
How does the format work?
8 fighters from the same weight division are chosen to compete in the tournament, some being up and coming prospects and some being slightly more experienced fighters.
The aim of the tournament is to give smaller fighters a chance to showcase their talents on a huge platform and win a coveted prize, a contract with one of the UK's top promotional companies Boxxer.
Two days before fight night, a draw is made at random to determine the first 4 quarter finals. Each tie is number, QF1, QF2, QF3 and QF4. The winner of QF1 vs QF2 will fight the winner of QF3 vs QF4 and the two winners of the semi final will meet in the final.
The fast and action packed tournament uses the 3x3 minute rounds format in all bouts. All the boxers will need to make the most of the short fights to gain the edge over their opposition. Previous winners of the tournament include Nick Webb, Cori Gibbs and Mike Lawal.
The 8 Cruiserweights competing are:
Ricky Reeves (2-0, 1 KO) - Sheffield
Jay Farrell (9-2, 5 KO's) - Liverpool
Ellis Zorro (11-0, 6 KO's) - Lewisham
Jamie Smith (3-0, 2 KO's) - Amersham
Anees Taj (5-1, 4 KO's) - Watford
Ryan Cotterell (1-0) - Wolverhampton
Sheldon McDonald (3-0, 1 KO) - Sheffield
Jack Fay (1-0-1) - Darwen
Originally scheduled to take place in Sheffield, the event was moved to Manchester in April. A good move as I feel Victoria warehouse should provide a small hall atmosphere to match the format, which is guaranteed to bring us brilliant action from some hungry hard hitting Cruiserweights with all of them looking to make a statement.
The division is one that's thriving in British boxing right now and the contenders will be looking for a breakout win which will see them take home a whopping £40,000 from 9 rounds. It will set them on the right path and to be elevated onto regular BOXXER shows with Sky Sports.
The draw will be on Thursday afternoon with the weigh ins the following day and
@deekayboxing will be covering the events at fight week providing updates of the draw and weigh ins and will also be ringside on Saturday evening with live updates via twitter.
