Exclusive Nick Campbell Interview
Scottish Heavyweight Nick Campbell made a successful start to his professional career last weekend with a win over Petr Frohlich on the undercard to Conor Benn vs Samuel Vargas.
31 year old Campbell spent eight years as professional Rugby player with Glasgow Warriors before turning to boxing. Nick won 11 of his 15 amateur fights picking up the Scottish super heavyweight title in the process.
Campbell is aiming to become the first Scot to become British Heavyweight Champion and got off to the perfect start in his first outing in a boxing ring last weekend. On the biggest platform in British boxing with Matchroom , Campbell blasted out Petr Frohlich in two rounds to claim his first victory.
I asked Nick some questions after his first win...
Question ; Thanks for your time Nick , first off , how are you , how's training and life at the moment?
Nick ; 'I'm all good , fit and healthy! Training is going well and constantly working away looking to make improvements and be ready whenever the call for the next fight comes.'
Question ; Nearly two weeks on from your professional debut on the Benn vs Vargas undercard , how did you rate your performance against Frohlich?
Nick ; 'I was very pleased with the week on the whole. Different experience and pressure being in the Matchroom bubble but I loved every minute of it. I expected to get rid of Frohlich quick and I just wanted to go out there and put the combinations together like we have been working on in the gym. There will be levels above Frohlich without doubt which I'm getting exposed to in sparring and loads to work on going forward but all round pleased with my performance.'
Question ; How did you find the whole experience of fighting on a Matchroom show love on TV?
Nick ; 'To be honest you definitely feel more pressure with everything going on around you but like I have said previously without the pressure the ability to perform to your best would not be there and its about using that pressure to enhance your performance which is important. Matchroom are the best in the business and I hope its not long before I get that opportunity again.'
Question ; What is your main goal for the sport and what do you want to achieve?
Nick ; ' I have stated before in interviews , if you turn pro without having ambitions to win titles there is no point. There has never been a Scottish heavyweight British Champion and that is something I would love to achieve and make history in the process. That's the long term goal and I have doubt about difficult it will be to achieve. My other main goal is to represent my Country Scotland and the island I live on Jersey to the best of my ability , get people behind me and have some exciting nights in the process.'
Favourite Music album?
Oasis , Definitely Maybe.
Favourite fight of all time ?
The rumble in the jungle!! I've watched "when we where kings" about 100 times.
Favourite upcoming fighter?
My good friend Sean Lazzerini , he's on the GB podium squad at the moment but without doubt will make a big statement in the pro game in due course.
A venue that you'd love to fight at?
There are 3!! Murrayfield stadium , the home of Scottish Rugby , with my background in the sport having played 8 years professionally I think it would be quite fitting.
Parkhead (Paradise) the home of my football team Celtic , ask any boxer either side of the old firm divide , fighting at Parkhead or Ibrox would be a dream come true.
Anywhere in Jersey C.I. it's a place I now call home and I have a lot of good good friends and supporters on the island. To fight in front of an island crowd would be incredible.
Thanks to Nick Campbell for his time.
