Exclusive John Ryder interview
John 'The Gorilla' Ryder , British super middleweight , with a record of 29 victories and only 5 defeats is aiming for World title glory after controversial loss to Callum Smith in 2019.
In a stacked super middleweight division , with the likes of Canelo Alvarez , Billy Joe Saunders , Caleb Plant and David Benavidez to name a few , the opportunities are few and far between with Canelo seemingly collecting all the belts on his road to be undisputed super middleweight champion.
John moved to 29-5 in December last year with a win over Mike Guy in Florida on Gennady Golovkin's undercard. A very once sided affair with the Brit winning 100-90 , 99-91 and 96-94 on the scorecards.
Question ; How are you John and how's training going at the moment?
Answer ; 'Training's going well , I'm in a pre camp phase. Just ticking over staying fir and waiting for a date to be confirmed.'
Question ; You last fought in December , have you got any potential fight news? There's a lot of fights to be made in the super middleweight division , are there any fights you are pushing for?
Answer ; 'I'm due to fight David Morell for the WBA regular super middleweight title , just waiting on the news of when and where.'
Question ; Another British super middleweight Zach Parker is making his mark on the division , ranked number 1 with the WBO , is he a fighter you have seen fight and would you welcome a fight with him in the future?
Answer ; 'He's making all the right noise and had a good win a couple weeks back , I don't think Alexander had previously been stopped so it was a good scalp , I'm targeting a World title but if our paths cross then happy days.'
Question ; Looking back at your fight with Callum Smith do you think you should be here as a World Champion ?
Answer ; 'Its a bitter pill to swallow , I feel I done more than enough to be declared the winner that night , but life goes on , I'm not going to dwell on it I'm just focused on getting a title around my waist.'
Question ; Does it ever come to mind that you could've had that opportunity to face Canelo or does it spur you on to go and get that opportunity now?
Answer ; 'I'd love the opportunity to face Canelo , he's the biggest name in the sport and I'm here to mix it with the best.'
Question ; Canelo fights Billy Joe Saunders on May 8th , who wins and how?
Answer ; 'It's a tough fight for Billy Joe , he's gonna pose a threat that Canelo hasn't faced yet with movement and speed , it's going to make for an interesting fight , I'd favour Canelo getting a points win in the states.'
