Gervonta Davis vs Mario Barrios Preview
This week we bring to you a preview of Gervonta Davis vs Mario Barrios in a fight where someone's 0 has got to go! This fight will take place on Saturday 26th June live on ShowTime and is for the WBA World Super Lightweight Championship.
Tale of Tape
Mario Barrios (26-0-0) 5’10
Gervonta Davis (24-0-0) 26 5’5 ½
First lets introduce the challenger Gervonta ”Tank” Davis fights out of Baltimore USA. He is 26 years old and has an unbeaten record of 24 wins with 23kos. He stands at 5’5 ½ with a 67 ½ inch reach and he’s a member of Mayweather promotions and a very talented fighter some say a mini Mayweather and you can see the comparison with his boxing style, slightly moving up weight for this fight, could
light welter be a step too far?
Last time out Davis fought Leo Santa Cruz and was outstanding, scoring a highlight reel uppercut KO. Santa Cruz tried his best to rough up Davis but Davis found a way to shrug him off and hit him
clean with shots, whilst Santa Cruz defence wasn't the greatest he's always in a fight and a warrior so that knockout shows the power that Davis has.
Tank who has campaigned at 130 and 135 is now jumping up another weight division to challenge for another regular title. Will he be able to transfer his natural power to 140? Luckily for Tank he also has an abundance of skill and will need to go through his full repertoire in this one.
Now on to the Champion Mario Barrios, he fights out of San Antonio, Texas and is the WBA Super Lightweight champion. Barrios brings a record of 26 wins with 17 KOs. He is also 26 and in this one he has the major physical advantages – He is 5’10 and has a 71 inch reach.
Mario Barrios hasn’t campaigned at the same level as his opponent but is a quality operator. He is tough, he lands solid jabs and he looks for the body shot which is a good tool to have, I’m not sure
being the taller man that body shots will be so affective in this fight as he’ll have to be careful fighter against a southpaw like Davis, if Barrios dips in too low he’s suspect to the counter and he’s quite open at times, his footwork is not the fastest but what I do like is his jab, sometimes he doubles it up then bang whacks in a body shot, then back upstairs and he goes again, he’s fit, he carries power and
being the bigger man, he’ll definitely look to use this to his advantage.
Will Barrios follow Santa Cruz lead and rough up Davis, get up close and land shots. He must be wary of the shots coming back but could look to pin Davis in corners or use the ropes to land those big
shots. For me for Barrios to go on and win this one he will need to use all of his physical attributes count and box off the back foot using his reach to keep Tank at bay and when he comes inside will
need to use his physical strength
I think that Tank has taken a tactical route to gaining another ‘world title’ in a new weight division and must see something in Barrios that makes him believe this is a winnable fight. Another example
of too many belts in Boxing as everyone knows Josh Taylor is the man at 140. Tank will be heavy favourite going into this one and we see Barrios as a very live opponent.
I think this will go the distance and being a cynic with this being on a Mayweather promotion with their biggest star it would be hard to look past Gervonta Davis taking the win – will it be deserved or
not? We will fight out Saturday night.
Where to watch?
