Exclusive Interview with WBA World Featherweight Champion Leigh Wood
Leigh Wood captured the WBA World Featherweight title earlier this month with a twelfth round KO victory over Xu Can at fight camp.
The first World title challenge for the Nottingham man ended in dramatic fashion this month at Fight camp, many doubted his challenge against the fearsome Xu Can due to Wood not fighting at World Level before but new trainer Ben Davidson has transformed him in to a new fighter to win the title.
The new WBA Champion and Massive Nottingham Forest fan will be hoping to stage a World title fight at the World famous City Ground next Summer.
Question; Hi Leigh , first off how does it feel being the new WBA Featherweight Champion of the World
Leigh; 'Its still sinking in , I think it will sink in when the belt comes'
Question; Coming in to the fight with Xu Can, a lot of the talk was if you could handle his speed and punch output but you managed to completely nullify his work, was that the game plan coming in to the fight?
Leigh ; 'We worked on that, we worked on exactly how to take away that, by the way that I did. I don't want to give to much away because I'm going to go and have to do it again by the looks of things. Look I only had 6 weeks notice for the fight, confident in what I had to do, and I went out there and did it. Before the fight I said a lot of people would say he didn't look like he turned up, he didn't look his normal self but I said people would say that because I took it away from him.'
Question; Now you're the World champion, what's next? Do you have a preferred opponent?
Leigh; 'There's a rematch clause I think they'll want that, they have no where else to go, so I'm looking at that first and I'm going to do a number on him again. Then there's some really big fights out there for me then we can hopefully get that June fight at the City Ground'
Question; Finally , you always talk about a fight at the City Ground, do you think we will see a big fight night there next summer?
Leigh' I'll get that rematch out the way, before the end of the year and then who knows, next summer, that's my dream, to be the first person to headline there and what an event it would be, it would be massive for the City, I'm confident its going to happen.'
