Leigh Wood Wins WBA World title
Leigh Wood stopped Xu Can in the twelfth and final round to become WBA Featherweight champion of the World.
Matchroom's venture with DAZN started in spectacular fashion , the unique location of Matchroom headquarters ,fans returning and an explosive main event.
There was a lot of pressure on this card to deliver, to prove that Matchroom made the right move in switching from Sky Sports to DAZN. Everything went perfectly in my opinion.
Coming in to the fight all the bookmakers had Xu Can strong favourite , due to his punch output and skill set but Nottingham's Leigh Wood wasn't fazed by 'The Monster'. He had a genuine self belief he could win this fight and win is what he did.
Pre fight all the talk was about weather Wood could handle the speed of Xu Can and the only way he could beat the World champion was by knockout but Wood made a mockery of them statements , outclassing then knocking out the Chinese fighter with only six weeks notice, which makes the feat even more impressive.
Picking his shots and counter punching saw Wood close in on the World title, Can looked lost in the ring at times struggling to break through the guard of Wood and simply wasn't able to handle when the Nottingham man changed to a southpaw stance on the occasion.
Towards the end of the twelfth a confident Leigh Wood put his foot on the gas and sent Can to the canvas with a monstrous right hand, Can managed to get up fairly early in the fight but the power puncher in Leigh Wood could smell victory and unleashed an onslaught that caused the ref to stop the fight, crowning Leigh Wood as WBA World Featherweight champion.
The options are endless now for Wood after his win with the potential of fighting the winner of this weeks Fight Camp main event, Kid Galahad vs Jazza Dickens or potentially a rematch with Xu Can.
Elsewhere on the Card Chris Billam-Smith added the British and European Cruiserweight titles to his commonwealth belt with a split decision victory in his grudge match with rival Tommy McCarthy.
Anthony Fowler continued on his upwards trajectory with a stoppage win over Rico Mueller in a one sided affair but the win set up a blockbuster fight with felloe Liverpudlian Liam Smith at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool on October 9th.
Campbell Hatton made it 3 wins as a professional with a comprehensive points victory over Jakub Laskowski and Jack Cullen convincingly beat former World title challenger Anvi Yildirim by unanimous decision. Sandy Ryan made a successful debut with a points victory over Kirstie Bavington.
