Anthony Joshua vs Oleksandr Usyk Preview
Time is once again upon us to the witness unified heavyweight World champion, Anthony Joshua, in action. His challenger, former undisputed cruiserweight World champion and pound for pound star, Oleksandr Usyk.
Two former Olympic gold medalists meet head on in this blockbuster clash at the world class Tottenham Hotspur Stadium live and exclusive on Sky Sports Box Office in the UK.
After the much anticipated undisputed match up between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua fell through, his only other option was WBO mandatory Oleksandr Usyk, who has been campaigning at heavyweight now for 2 years and has defeated Chazz Witherspoon in his first outing, then an impressive points victory over Derek Chisora last year.
The general consensus is that Joshua wont be able to outbox the Ukranian who is so he will have to secure victory by knockout however after his last win over Kubrat Pulev you could see his vast improvements in his skill set from his jab to his movement.
Last time out Joshua beat Kubrat Pulev in an entertaining battle with the Bulgarian stopping him in the ninth round. Adding Pulev to the already impressive list of names on his CV, including Andy Ruiz, Povetkin, Joseph Parker, Wladimir Klitschko and Dillian Whyte to name a few.
Oleksandr Usyk is coming off an impressive win over British Heavyweight Derek Chisora, only his second fight since moving to Heavyweight. Usyk has never been afraid to fight in the away corner winning the majority of his title fights on the road. He is a former Undisputed cruiserweight champion winning the World Boxing Super Series on the way.
Lawrence Okolie makes his first defence of his WBO World cruiserweight title against mandatory Dilan Prasovic (15-0).
Okolie won the world title at the start of the year with a knockout victory over Kryzstof Glowacki and will be hoping to make a successful defence of his title which would then open the doors for a unification bout next year with one of the other cruiserweight World champions which include Mairis Briedis, Ilunga Makabu and Arsen Goulamirian.
Callum Smith ventures in to the light heavyweight division on Saturday night for the first time. He fights Lenin Castillo and will be under new trainer Buddy McGirt for this bout.
Smith most recently challenged boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez in December but lost on a wide points decision and the Callum Smith we are used to did not show up that night.
The Liverpool fighter has stated he felt he outstayed his welcome at 168 (Super Middleweight) and will be better suited to 175(Light Heavyweight). With his size and long reach it shouldn't take Smith too long to settle in that division. The light heavyweight division in Britain is thriving at the moment with fighters such as Joshua Buatsi, Callum Johnson, Anthony Yarde and Lyndon Arthur all pushing for World title shots.
Exciting welterweight Florian Marku steps up to fight Romanian Maxim Prodan in a fight that could steal the show on the undercard. Prodan has 15 KO victories to his name and Marku 6 knockouts in his 8 victories which makes this fight unlikely to go the distance.
Marku has been very vocal about his desire to fight Conor Benn but will need to get past this stern test first to even be in the mix for that fight.
Campbell Hatton enters in to his fourth professional fight, when he faces Sonni Martinez of Uruguay. Christopher Ousley takes on Khasan Baysangurov over 10 rounds for the vacant WBO Inter-continental middlweight title and Daniel Lapin fights Pawel Martyniuk to round off the undercard.
