Sam Eggington Overcomes Bilel Jkitou In Modern Classic
'The Savage' Sam Eggington showed exactly why he is one of Britain's most exciting fighters with a fiery toe-to-toe war with Frenchman Bilel Jkitou in Coventry on Friday night to retain his WBC silver middleweight title.
In a sensational battle that gripped the fans in the arena and live on Channel 5, the fight provided edge of your seat drama, including a staggering 1317 punches thrown by Eggington, which will be welcomed by fans as we are getting too used to one sided fights with several other promotors
Eggington came in to this fight with a reputation of an entertaining fighter and only enhanced that with this performance. Credit to both fighters, from start to finish they both left it all in the ring. Sam was visibly marked dup from the fight due to the punch output of Jkitou but managed to sway the judges with his work.
There was some slight controversy on the scorecards, with one judge scoring it 116-112 in favour of Jkitou whilst the other two judges had it 117-111 and 117-112 to the home fighter.
"I made harder work of it than I should of" said Eggington after his Split decision win. "I should have boxed more. I switched between boxing and having a war."
The popular and entertaining Stevie McKenna appeared in the co-main event against another Frenchman in Moussa Gary. The 'Hitman' McKenna is well known for his devastating KO record previously winning all 8 bouts inside the distance but that was to end on Friday as Gary took him the distance for the first time in his career.
Mckenna started extremely well landing a big right hand in the opening seconds but never really had his opponent hurt. Gary had limited success in the fight but credit to him as he came to win. Stevie needs to work on his boxing ability if he is to succeed in the pro ranks as his wild style leaves him open to taking too many shots.
Isaac Chamberlain made a successful return to the ring with an easy nights work, stopping Ben Thomas in just one round after his his corner pulled their man out of the fight on his stool.
Fan favourite River Wilson-Bent scored another win on his ever improving record and sent his army of fans home happy when he beat late replacement Gabor Gorbics over 10 rounds. Heavyweight prospect Tommy Welch was taken the distance for the first time as a professional against Spaniard Alvaro Terrero.
Kaisee Benjamin showed why he is one to watch in the Welterweight division, stopping Jarkko Putkonen during the third round improving his record to 13-1-1.
There was also wins for Shakan Pitters as he beat Farouk Daku on points. Michael Hennessy Jr and Brett McGinty both picked up KO wins earlier in the night whilst Aaaron Mckenna improved to 12-0 with a points win.
