Lara vs Warrington 2 ends prematurely due to cut
Josh Warrington's much anticipated rematch with Mauricio Lara ended after only 2 rounds due to a horror cut sustained by Lara in the second round of the bout in Leeds.
After a champion style ring walk, the wait was finally over to see if Josh Warrington could exact revenge on Mexican rival Mauricio Lara who dismantled 'The Leeds Warrior' earlier this year.
Warrington looked like his former self in the opener, with his compact defense to avoid Lara's thumping shots. Josh did land a right hook in the first minute of the boot that unsettled Lara and then shortly after attacked Lara's body briefly to the delight of the Leeds faithful. Lara landed a couple of clean shots but they didn't faze the Brit.
However during the second round the two fighters heads clashed as Warrington was on his way in and caused a horrific cut to Lara. The Mexican instantly winced in pain and the damage was clear to see. The ringside doctor made the call to end the fight shortly before the start of the third round meaning the bout would end in a technical draw.
The fight was warming up nicely and was on its way to replicate the first fight between the pair in February. After the fight promoter Eddie Hearn stated he wants to get Josh Warrington back out in the ring again before the year is out whilst he waits for Lara's cut to heal which will be roughly 6 months. The featherweight scene in Britain is thriving at the moment with Leigh Wood and Kid Galahad both winning World titles in the last month and could both be potential fights for Warrington but pose massive risks if he was to take them fights or he could go down the WBO or WBC route and attempt to become a 2 time World Champion which would make the third Lara fight an even bigger fight.
Katie Taylor successfully defended her Undisputed World titles with a comprehensive shutout victory over American Jennifer Han over 10 rounds. Taylor dominated the fight throughout and scored a knockdown in the eight but Han managed to see out the remainder of the fight but never troubled Taylor. All three scorecards read 100-89. Katie Taylor will now be looking to cement her legacy as one of the most successful women's fighter of all time with a fight against Amanda Serrano or if that fight doesn't materialise, a rematch with Undisputed welterweight World champion Jessica McCaskill.
Conor Benn continued his perfect professional career with a unanimous points victory over Mexican Adrian Granados. Originally scheduled for Fight Camp week 1, this bout was rearranged due to Benn testing positive for Covid. The fight was rather uneasy on the eye as Granados decided to box on the back foot and was reluctant to engage with Benn, much too Benn's frustration which was shown in the tenth round when he screamed at Granados to come to him and meet in the middle of the ring.
This fight for Benn was more of a measuring fight to see where he is at what level he can fight at, he passed this test with flying colours however there is much work to be done before he can be thrown in with the likes of Adrian Broner and Amir Khan.
The fairytale story of Maxi Hughes continued as he claimed the IBO World lightweight title with a punch perfect display to dethrone Jovanni Straffon. Hughes had been on a superb run since losing to Liam Walsh in 2019 and 2 years ago you could never have predicted him to be fighting for a World title on a huge Matchroom show infront of 20,000 fans in Leeds.
In the post fight interview Hughes called out WBC champion Devin Haney although that fight is unrealistic Hughes has shown what rthe underdog can do and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if he takes that fight.
Hopey Price showcased exactly why he is one of Britain's top prospect with a second round stoppage win over Zahid Hussain. Price now moves to 6-0and will be moving on to British title eliminators in the near future.
Fan Favourite Ebanie Bridges opened up the Dazn broadcast with a 6 round points victory over tough opponent Mailys Gangloff, it wasn't an easy night for the Australian with many spectators believing the fight was a draw at best. Bridges sustained a bad hand injury during the fight and could be out of action for a while but when she returns a rematch with Shannon Courtenay could be on the cards for a World Title.
Jack Bateson remained unbeaten after a points win over Felix Garcia over 6 rounds and survived a scare in the second round when he was knocked down but managed to see out the fight. There were also wins for Brandon Stansfield and Mali Wright on the undercard.
