Liam Smith vs Anthony Fowler Preview
This Saturday night Anthony Fowler steps up to the test of Liam Smith in the 'Battle Of Liverpool', one city, one night, one winner.
In a huge night in Liverpool, Matchroom Boxing present a stacked bill with a British title fight between the captivating Ted Cheeseman and the unbeaten Troy Williamson, a debut for Tokyo Olympian Peter McGrail and the massive main event between two of Britain's best super welterweights.
You don't really get much better than this on the domestic scene, two fighters from the same city fighting for bragging rights in front of a sold out M&S bank arena.
Liam Smith is a proven World level operator having held the WBO super Welterweight title and shared the ring with Canelo Alavrez and Jamie Munguia previously and is no doubt number 1 in the 154 division in Britain.
For Fowler, he has never been in with anyone close to Smiths level as of yet but since being under the wing of Shane McGuigan he has added a lot to his game dispatching all of his 4 opponents inside the distance. Fowler is yet to get the big breakout win, but this is the opportunity he has been craving. His sole loss on his record came against long standing rival Scott Fitzgerald in March 2019, a performance he knows wasn't his best and he openly admits the fight with Scott was very personal and that got to his head.
'Beefy' is the bookies, but you cant rule out Fowler who is on the rise and at 30 years of age, he can't afford a slip here, that would shatter his dreams of a future World title shot.
In the chief support, Ted Cheeseman defends his British welterweight title against the unbeaten Troy Williamson. Cheeseman won the title back in March on the undercard of Povetkin vs Whyte 2 and this will be his first defence in his second reign as champion. Williamson has really gone under the radar in the super welterweight division but managed to climb in to a mandatory spot to challenge for the title.
In another domestic battle in the super welterweight division Kieron Conway shares the ring with JJ Metcalf, both have also challenged for the British title against Cheeseman, Conway battling to a draw and Metcalf suffering a late KO.
Last time out Conway challenged Souleymane Cissokho on the undercard of Canelo vs Saunders, in an entertaining fight that he almost got the stoppage, knocking down Cissokho in the ninth but eventually lost of the scorecards.
Super lightweight Luke Willis will fight fan favourite Rylan Charlton over 10 rounds, Willis, currently unbeaten, takes a huge step up to face one of the rising stars over the last 18 months. Charlton burst on to the scene with an emphatic KO win over Joe Laws, a win that shocked everyone. 'The Pint Size Powerhouse' then went on to challenge Florian Marku which he eventually lost but put on a brave display.
Up and coming Heavyweight Soloman Dacres will need to raise his game as he fights the tough and respected Kamil Sokolowski. Dacres has had a perfect start to his professional career to date, accumulating 2 wins with no defeats. Sokolowski is no pushover, he will provide a stern test for Dacres.
Blane Hyland fights Santiago San Eusebio in a super flyweight contest whilst Rhiannon Dixon looks to move to 4-0 when she fights Anaelle Angerville.
Team GB Tokyo Olympian, Peter McGrail makes his professional debut in the undercard. McGrail made a shock exit early in the games after being drawn in to a tough fight.
