Cori Gibbs wins Boxxer tournament in Liverpool
Cori Gibbs wins three fights in one night to grab the prize fund and win the Boxxer series tournament.
Tournament favourite Gibbs, entered the competition as favourite and went on to prove the bookmakers right as he beat Sean Dodd, Lee Appleyard and Tom Farrell on the way to victory.
“I was confident going into it but it’s a different feeling to win it. I pulled it off and I’m just happy,” said Gibbs after his tournament win.
In his opening bout of the night he faced fan favourite Sean Dodd in a tactical affair, unlike the first three fights that were fast paced thrillers, the pair were reluctant to let loose and instead picked their shots. Gibbs out boxed Dodd at the start of the contest but Dodd came firing back in the latter stages but ultimately it was Gibbs who got the decision.
In the Semi Final, Lee Appleyard stepped in the opposition corner after he defeated Levi Kinsoa in the quarter finals. It was a brilliant displayed by Gibbs who avoided much of Appleyard's heavy shots and boxed to a comfortable points decision.
Earlier in the evening, Lee Appleyard battled Levi Kinsoa in what was for many the fight of the night. The pair set a high pace for the fight and left in all in the ring and showed why these tournaments are so exciting.
Levi Kinsoa and Sean Dodd both lost their quarter final match ups but put in very competitive performances and on another both could've progressed further.
