Joe Cordina Stuns Ogawa With Brutal KO To Win IBF World Title
Joe Cordina (15-0 9KOs) took just two rounds to stop Kenichi Ogawa (26-2-1 18KOs) at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff to snatch the IBF Super-Featherweight title.
Cordina becomes just the 13th Welsh World champion in history, joining a famous list of fighters that include Barry Jones, Joe Calzaghe and Jimmy Wilde to name a few.
The fight started in a fairly cagey fashion, both fighters trying to work out one-another with Ogawa edging the first round with the more significant of shots between the two.
Halfway through the second round, Cordina landed the shot of his career, a devastating right hand to the chin of Ogawa out of nowhere. The Japanese fighter fell straight to the canvas, sending the Motorpoint Arena in to a frenzy.
In just 15 fights Cordina becomes the second 2016 Rio Olympian to be crowned a world champion.
"It is a lifetime of work gone into five and a half minutes of work. I'm just so thankful," Cordina said.
"I've been throwing some big punches in this camp, I've been in with the likes of Conor Benn and sparred with him and he is one of the most explosive boxers. We've been working hard in the gym.
"We've been working on that punch all camp and it's an amazing feeling when you put hours and hours into it and it comes off in the fight and it's lights out."
